About Lund University

The University is ranked as one of the top 100 in the world. We tackle complex problems and global challenges and work to ensure that knowledge and innovations benefit society. We provide education and research in engineering, science, law, social sciences, economics and management, medicine, humanities, theology, fine art, music and drama.

Our 42,000 students and 7,680 employees are based at our campuses in Lund, Malmö and Helsingborg. The University has a turnover of around SEK 7 869 million (EUR 834 million), of which two thirds is in research and one third in education.

We are an international university with global recruitment. We cooperate with 600 partner universities in over 70 countries and are the only Swedish university to be a member of the strong international networks LERU (the League of European Research Universities) and Universitas 21.

Two major facilities for materials research are currently under construction in Lund: the MAX IV Laboratory, which will be a world-leading synchrotron radiation laboratory and ESS, a European facility that will be home to the world’s most powerful neutron source. These will be of decisive importance for materials and life sciences and for industrial development. In Lund, Medicon Village has also been established and will offer a unique environment for life sciences; integrating research, innovation and enterprise creates the conditions for improved health and quality of life.

  • Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering, LTH, is a faculty of Lund University and has overall responsibility for education and research in engineering, architecture and industrial design. Our strategies are based on diversity and cross-boundary cooperation and are characterised by gender equality, participation, quality and renewal.

For more than 50 years, education, research and innovations with their roots in LTH have made a significant and lasting impression on society.

Today, we are home to some of Sweden’s most attractive study programmes, and have a broad research base. We are world-leading in a number of fields, including nanotechnology, combustion physics and medical technology.

The Faculty of Engineering, LTH, is home to 9,600 students and 1,500 employees from all over the world. Most of our programmes are taught in Lund, but a few are housed at the campus in Helsingborg, and the School of Aviation is located in Ljungbyhed.

  • Faculty of Science

The goal of the Faculty of Science at Lund University is to conduct operations of the highest standard in order to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

At Lund University’s Faculty of Science, we study and describe the physical world. We seek to understand everything from the smallest components of nature and molecular processes in the human body to the sensitivity of climate systems and the capacity of exoplanets to support life. Research in science enables the development of new drugs, new building materials and models that predict climate change, and offers us the giddy realisation that we may not be alone in the Universe.

The Faculty of Science is ranked among the top 50 in the world for several subjects (Times Higher Education and QS). We have undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and courses that aim both to satisfy our students’ burning interest in science and to meet the need of society for competent science graduates.

  • Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law at Lund University is a modern faculty with a clean international profile. We offer an environment which is suitable and welcoming for Swedish and international students, lecturers and researchers alike. Education, research and interaction with the surrounding community are the three mainstays of our work. The connection between these three mainstays is particularly apparent in the programmes and courses on offer, where students meet both researchers and professionally active lawyers with qualifications and experience from various areas of law.

The faculty's geographical location, in the heart of the Oresund region, brings unique opportunities for boundary-crossing cooperation in the surrounding area; at the same time we also have well developed contacts with different universities throughout the world. We have a large number of exchange agreements which make it possible for our students to study abroad within the framework of their degree programme, while law students from a host of other countries can study for one or several semesters at our faculty.

  • Faculty of Social Sciences

The Social Sciences consist of a number of disciplines which strive to understand people and human relationships in terms of structures and systems.

Most of the challenges of our time are the result of human activity and must be solved through societal processes. Scientists provide important contributions to identifying and explaining environmental problems, for example. Engineering and medicine can create
solutions for these problems. But implementing new ideas requires a combination of knowledge about and questioning of human behaviour and our social and political institutions.

Our researchers’ task is to make the functioning and dynamics of society comprehensible, thereby creating the opportunity to change and, in the best case, prevent the occurrence of problems. Education and research in the social and behavioural sciences generates knowledge and solutions that contribute to efficient social organisation, economic competitiveness and socially sustainable development

  • Faculty of Medicine

Our Faculty offers a wealth of research, postgraduate and undergraduate education programmes in medicine, nursing and health. The Faculty encompasses 2,800 full-time students enrolled in 8 degree programmes, as well as 1200 graduate students and 1800 employees.

We conduct a wide range of research, from experimental to applied, in order to answer questions related to clinical practice, health sciences and society.

The Faculty of Medicine and Region Skåne interact to strengthen developments in healthcare and clinically focused medical research in the region. The university and the healthcare system strive to work together to formulate new methods to prevent and combat disease. The Faculty educates tomorrow's healthcare personnel and much of this education takes place within the regional medical system.

  • Faculties of Humanities and Theology

The Faculties of Humanities and Theology offer a number of programmes and courses that are taught in English and in other languages. Most of the courses that are taught in English are at an advanced level, but the SAS-courses (Special Area Studies) and a certain number of other courses are available for undergraduate students.
The Humanities and Theology form one faculty area at Lund University. The area consists of eight departments and offers studies in subjects ranging from cultural sciences, history, philosophy, archaeology, languages and literature to theology and religious studies. A number of the subjects taught through the Faculties of Humanities and Theology have been part of the curriculum at Lund since the university was founded in 1666. Studies in these fields today are mostly individually designed, being combinations of independent courses. There are also fixed degree programmes.

History of Lund University

Lund University has a long and vibrant history covering almost 350 years of teaching. It has evolved from just a few hundred students and professors being paid with meat and grain into its present form, with around 42 000 students and a position of excellence in international teaching and research.

Lund University was founded in 1666 as a step in the process of making Skåne Swedish and to demonstrate the re-establishment of Swedish control.  There had previously been a studium generale (the equivalent of a university college) for priests in Lund, founded in 1438 and operational in the 16th century.

The new university was given the name Regia Academia Carolina. At the beginning there were only four faculties – theology, law, medicine and philosophy.

Originally, the University did not have any premises of its own for teaching. At the end of the 17th century Karl XI donated Kungshuset in the Lundagård park to the University, which thus acquired its first main building.

The real rise of the University came during the 18th century. New chairs were established and the number of students increased.

In 1852 the University was given new statutes that replaced the outdated regulations in force, and the state took over responsibility for finances. In the 1880s the first few female students began studying in Lund.

In 1900 there were only 1 000 students in Lund, a small elite who were educated for higher public office as priests, teachers, doctors and lawyers. Lund University grew strongly throughout the 20th century and is today Sweden’s largest institution of higher education and research.
