The first two semesters consist of mandatory and optional courses. Fundamental knowledge of modern economics, especially of developing and emerging markets, as well as knowledge in special fields of international management are integral parts of the modules.
In the second year, students have the opportunity to spend one semester abroad at one of our partner universities. This is followed by a three-month internship with an integrated Master's thesis, which has to be written and supervised in Freiberg or at any of our partner universities. There are also double degree options, where students go the a partner university for one year and follow the Master's programme at both universities to earn two degrees.

    Educational organisation

The first semester consists of the following modules: International Business: Theory and Effects of FDI; International Management: Operating in a Global Context; Introduction to Research Methodology and Econometrics; The Economies in Central and Eastern Europe; Operations Management; Multicultural Communication, Language and Rhetoric; Applied Environmental Management.
The second semester consists of the modules: International Development and Resources; International Marketing; Competition Policy and Intellectual Property Rights; International Banking and Finance in Emerging Markets; Supply Chain Management; Scenario Planning, Simulation Game, and Executive Dialogues; International Resource and Environmental Economics; Applied Environmental Management.
Students who are not native speakers of German are offered the possibility to study German as a foreign language in two consecutive modules.
The modules include lectures, tutorials, practical exercises, case studies, and seminars.
At the end of the four semesters (two years), students are required to have earned 120 ECTS points.

    Study abroad unit(s)

In the second year, students have the opportunity to spend one semester abroad at one of our partner universities. Students who choose a double degree option stay one year at the partner university. All others stay one semester and then return to Freiberg for internship and Master's thesis.

    Internships

An internship of minimum nine weeks is to be completed during the fourth semester.

    Forms of assessment

The types of examinations include (i) written and/or oral tests after the end of each semester and/or (ii) assignments, presentations, case studies, group work, etc. during the semester. There are also optional weekend seminars, at which assessment is determined by the degree of active participation on the part of the student.

    Course objectives

The objective of this Master's programme is to provide students with skills in organisation and enterprise management. In this respect, the relationships between Eastern Europe, South Eastern Europe, and Western Europe play an important role, as well as the relationships with the emerging markets in Asia.
Students will be equipped with the necessary background knowledge to target their abilities in management towards the economic conditions of these economic regions. Special attention is paid to the management of foreign direct investments and multinational enterprises, natural resources, general challenges of development in the countries of these regions, as well as the active role of the state, particularly with regard to competition policy.
Students acquire cross-cultural and communicative abilities.
The Master's programme imparts fundamental knowledge both in modern economics, particularly with regard to modern economics of development, and in the most important aspects of international management.

    Arrival support

The International Centre provides support to new international students by assigning a mentor to each new student. A buddy is a German or international student who speaks German and English, sometimes French, Spanish or Russian. The mentor takes the newcomer through the first steps in Freiberg and at the university, i.e. picking the student up at the train station upon arrival, helping with enrolment, and with all other required administrative formalities (e.g. health care, opening a bank account, administrative formalities at city hall). Students who wish to participate need to register well in advance of their arrival (http://www.iuz.tu-freiberg.de).

Services and support for international students

Intensive and individual professional advice is provided by the supervisors and coordinators of the programme. The International Centre offers support to all international students within the mentor programme, German language courses as well as information and consultation about studying and living in Freiberg.
Student initiatives offer valuable cultural services for all students and PhD students at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and support the intercultural exchange at the university. Their activities include the international weekend at the beginning of the winter semester, the regular international corner with topical events, and trips to interesting places in Germany.
Psychological counselling is also provided to all students in need.

    Accommodation

A limited number of places is available in the dormitories (http://www.studentenwerk-freiberg.de). The rent for a room ranges from 170 to 320 EUR per month. The International Centre offers support in finding accommodation on the private rental market (http://www.iuz.tu-freiberg.de).
