Our Chemistry Master's programme provides you with an exceptional toolbox for your future. The programme is closely associated with the research Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM). Its mission is to fundamentally understand, design and control the functioning of molecules and materials. The institute is a centre of excellence that trains the next generation of leaders in science and entrepreneurship. Research in the IMM ranges from condensed matter science to chemical biology, and builds on novel theoretical, synthetic and spectroscopic methods. Our goal is to explore new roads proceeding from synthesis and growth to design and architecture of molecular constructs and materials with specific, desired properties. The cooperation of chemists and physicists, and increasingly biologists, in one research institute is unique worldwide. It is the secret of IMM's success and its many scientific breakthroughs.
The funding we have received for our research reflects the achievements we have made. Prof. dr. Wilhelm Huck received an ERC Grant for his research on chemical reactions in extremely small drops of water. The ultimate goal is to build a synthetic cell for this. We need to understand how complex networks function in confined spaces and how the physical environment of the cell impacts on enzymatic reactions. Prof. dr. Roeland Nolte received an ERC to do research on the development of supramolecular catalysts and materials using nature as a guide. Prof. dr. Jan van Hest received funding from the Gravitation programme for his work on self-repairing materials, materials that continually adapt to their environment. Just think of how the body repairs its cells and ensures that the right substances reach the right places at the right time. They want to gain fundamental understanding of the complexity of that dynamic.
The Nijmegen approach
The first thing you will notice as you enter our Faculty of Science is the open atmosphere. This is reflected by the light and transparent building and the open minded spirit of the working, exploring and studying people that you will meet there. No wonder students from all over the world have been attracted to Nijmegen. You study in small groups, in direct and open contact with members of the staff. In addition, Nijmegen has excellent student facilities, such as high-tech laboratories, libraries and study landscapes'.

Molecular chemistry is a creative science, where chemists synthesise molecules with new biological or physical properties to address scientific or societal challenges. Think of new catalytic conversions, lead compounds for future medicines or the next generation of conducting polymers. The specialisation Molecular Chemistry offers education in connection with top-level research in the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM), enabling you
to develop in-depth knowledge of the design, synthesis and characterisation of unprecedented functional molecular structures.
Chemistry of Life
The track Chemistry of Life offers education in connection with state-of-the-art research involving the design and synthesis of complex molecular systems to address challenging problems in chemical and physical biology.This track sits firmly at the interface between chemistry and biology and will give you a solid grounding in modern synthetic organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry and chemical biology, but also an insight into the latest fluorescence and scanning probe microscopy tools. Research in the area of chemical biology at Radboud University is at the highest national and international level.
The track Physical Chemistry offers education in connection with state-of-the-art research aiming to fundamentally understand, design and control the functioning of molecules and materials. The track appeals to Chemistry students with a strong physical interest and Physics students who focus on chemical aspects. Examples are self-organization of complex molecular systems, structure-function relationships of nanostructured materials or fundamentally understand the structure of molecules and the way they interact. This involves theoretical skills and the use and understanding of advanced spectroscopic tools to gain insight in structure and dynamics of molecules and materials in relation to the intended functionality.
Science and technology clearly have a profound influence on society, but the reverse is also true: society significantly shapes the ways in which science and technology evolve. Economic interests, public opinion and policy shifts are decisive for the shaping of science and technology. However, experience has shown that scientists on the one hand and the general public, government and businesses on the other aren't always able to clearly understand one another. That is why experts with a background in science and an understanding of social processes are indispensable. This specialisation will therefore teach you how to build a bridge between scientific expertise and societal practices. You'll become a biologist, chemist, mathematician, etc. that reflects on the implications of scientific results and advises on how to turn this knowledge into practical use for policymaking or communication purposes. This reflection will not just be scientific; you'll also learn how to detect the philosophical, political and ethical side of issues. You'll make scientists familiar with social perceptions as much as you'll be advising governments and businesses or informing the general public.
Both the public sector and businesses struggle with the question of how to address sustainability, health, energy and IT security issues. Many of the challenges that society faces are rooted in the natural or computer sciences but have strong links to other disciplines. Solutions require scientists with an additional understanding of the societal aspects of these problems, and the ability to speak the language of and work with all possible stakeholders like scientists, civil servants and politicians. The Master's specialisation in Science, Management and Innovation will therefore take you out of the lab and place you right in the heart of society. After the first year in which you broaden your knowledge in your scientific field, you'll learn the skills you can use to make a direct contribution to society. This contribution can range from the creation of policies that tackle social issues to project development or market research. The combination of expertise – science, policy and business – is highly sought after and will prepare you for a dynamic career in business, a job in the public sector or in the a social (research) organisation.
Entering the Master’s programme in Chemistry requires a Bachelor’s degree in:
Your degree has to be equivalent to a Dutch university diploma. The Admission's Office will determine if an international student has the required knowledge to be admitted. The Admission's Office will also indicate if the student is required to follow specific courses from the Bachelor's programme to eliminate possible deficiencies.

Radboud Scholarship Programme
Open to talented prospective non-EEA students - the scholarship consists of a partial tuition waiver.
Orange Tulip Scholarship
Open to students from Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and China - offers a tuition fee waiver of 6,750 euros and exemption from visa and health insurance costs.
Open to excellent American students - the grant will be paid in 12 monthly instalments of 1,050 euros, international travel and the cost of the residence permit will be covered.
Erasmus Mundus ERANET
Open for Russian candidates - applicants may be undergraduate exchange students, Master's students, doctorate and post-doctorate candidates, as well as academic and administrative staff.
Sino-Dutch Bilateral Exchange Scholarship
Open to students from China - the Dutch contribution to the scholarship consist of monthly allowance 1,000 euros, international travel costs 1,400 euros, tuition/research fee 1,906 euros, it also covers the cost of visa, insurance and other.
Dutch Student Finance
EU/EEA students and Swiss students under 30 years of age are eligible if they are working at least 56 hours per month in the Netherlands, or have been living in the Netherlands for five years or more. Dutch student finance consists of four components: a basic grant, a supplementary grant (depending on the parental income), a student travel product, and a loan.
