    Description

    This professionally accredited degree provides a unique opportunity to study the impact of nutrition on health and disease, from the cell and molecular level through to people and populations.

    You will also discover the impact of food composition and processing on nutritional value, quality and consumer acceptance.

    You will take a placement year working in the commercial sector, applying your learning in a practical setting and developing highly valuable skills for the graduate job market.

    You may also choose modules from other subject areas - including marketing, psychology, biology and biomedical sciences - to develop skills appropriate for all areas of the food industry and research.

    Course Content

    Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

    Stage 1

    Intercalating Year

    Between Stages 2 and 3, you spend the equivalent of one academic year on an approved work placement. The placement will involve work in food and/or human nutrition and may be within the UK or abroad. You will prepare a report on the work you have been doing as an integral part of the placement year.

    All candidates are considered on an individual basis. If your qualifications are not listed here, please see our additional entry requirements web pages to find out which other qualifications are considered.

    - A Levels

    AAB-ABB normally including Biology and another science subject but excluding General Studies. Home Economics/Food Technology will be considered instead of Biology at A level. Chemistry is preferred at A or AS level but not essential. GCSE Mathematics (minimum grade B) required if not offered at A or AS level.

    - Scottish Qualifications

    AAABB-AABBB at Higher Grade including two science subjects. Advanced Higher Biology and another science subject normally required. Higher Grade Chemistry desirable.

    - International Baccalaureate

    34-35 points normally including Higher Level Biology at grade 6 or above. Chemistry is preferred at Higher Level but not essential. Mathematics or Mathematical Studies and Chemistry required at Standard Level grade 5 if not offered at Higher Level.

    - Irish Leaving Certificate

    A1A1A1B1B-A1A1B1B1B at Higher Level, preferably including Biology, Mathematics and another science subject.

    - Access Qualifications

    At least 45 level 3 credits at Distinction. A unit in Biological Sciences is essential and units in Chemistry, Mathematics or Quantitative Methods are desirable.

    - BTEC Level 5 HND

    Applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

    - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC National Diploma)

    A science-related subject with substantial biology and chemistry units at overall DDD-DDM.

    - Cambridge Pre-U

    D3, D3, M2 - D3, M2, M2 in Principal Subjects normally including Biology and another science subject. Chemistry is preferred as a principal subject, but not essential. GCSE Mathematics (minimum grade B) required if not offered as a principal subject.

    - PARTNERS - A Levels

    BBB normally including Biology and another science subject and excluding General Studies. Home Economics/Food Technology will be considered instead of Biology at A level. Chemistry is preferred at A/AS level but not essential. Mathematics required at GCSE (minimum grade B) if not offered at A/AS level.

    Accreditation

    This degree is professionally accredited by the Association for Nutrition. This means our graduates can apply for direct entry onto the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists at the Associate level. This would then entitle you to use the letters ANutr after your name, without having to go through the lengthy process of additional assessment that is required from graduates of courses that are not accredited.
