    Are you ready for a challenge? Planning a mission to Mars, getting a Boeing 747 weighing 390,000 kg into the air, observing and predicting floods and earthquakes – these are just a few of the themes you’ll be encountering in this degree programme. High-tech, broad-based, internationally oriented, tough and passionate: that’s how you can describe the programme. If you enjoy pushing your limits in order to achieve breakthroughs, then the degree programme in Aerospace Engineering could be right for you.

    The field of study is extremely broad and exciting. It is not confined just to the aerospace industry. Besides acquiring the specialist know-how you will also learn to work in teams, to make compromises, to search for solutions to complex problems and to communicate effectively.

    The Bachelor’s degree programme of Aerospace Engineering is the only one at the Delft University of Technology that is completely taught in the English language. (see also the brochure)

    What does the degree programme contain?

    From the day you start the degree programme, you are involved in aerospace engineering. The aircraft, the rocket and the satellite are used as study objects to teach you basic technical knowledge. And you really need this technical foundation, because the material is difficult and so you will need to work hard to pass the examinations. In the course of the programme the emphasis increasingly shifts from theory to practice. The Bachelor’s degree programme lasts three years.

    Besides the regular programme you can also take minors (optional courses). You conclude the Bachelor’s progamme with a project that lasts ten weeks. Once you have your Bachelor’s degree you can transfer to the Master’s programme in Aerospace Engineering (brochure) or another following Master’s degree programme.

    What are your career prospects?

    Generally speaking you should have no problems getting a job after your Master’s degree programme. Thanks to your broad-based studies you can work in many fields. You could get a job in the Dutch aerospace industry or in the business sector with companies such as Phillips, Shell, IBM, or also various consultancy firms. And of course you could start your own company.

    Course Content

    The Bachelor’s degree programme in Aerospace Engineering lasts three years and is divided into semesters. This means that you take examinations twice a year. You attend a mix of lectures, tutorials, laboratory courses and projects.

    In the course of these three years you receive a broad education in all aerospace disciplines, such as:

    • aerodynamics
    • lightweight and advanced materials
    • propulsion

    In the first two years all students follow the same curriculum. In order to help you progress in your studies, in the first part of the degree programme you receive support from a senior student, your mentor. In the first year you can select either Dutch-language or English-language tuition, while from the second year onwards all teaching takes place in English. This is an excellent preparation for your further studies and the international job market. On successfully completing the degree programme you receive a Bachelor’s degree, which is also an excellent point of departure for further study in a Master’s degree programme. This can be done at our faculty, at another Master’s degree programme at TU Delft, or abroad as well.

    The first year

    In the first year you not only spend time studying alone. You immediately start working in a team context as well: your team gets a room with computer facilities so that you can carry out an assignment, including calculations and reports. This means you can apply the theory from the lectures in practice, while also being prepared for your later working environment.

    Binding recommendation on continuation of Studies

    Warning: you need to get results. If you obtain less than 45 credits (out of 60 )in the first year you will receive a so-called negative binding recommendation on continuation of studies (or, by its Dutch acronym, a negative BSA). This means that you cannot continue your studies at Aerospace Engineering.

    Second year

    In the second year (and the third year) the foundation created in the first year is expanded and applied. Together with five other students you board our Cessna Citation II business jet, the faculty’s flying classroom, with which you can carry out measurements in the air.

    Third year

    Your third year begins with a minor and you conclude the year with the Design-Synthesis Exercise. This is an exercise carried out in a group in which you apply all the knowledge you have acquired in the previous years. This assignment can range from designing an aircraft to planning a mission to Mars!

    The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering is the only faculty at TU Delft that provides a complete English-language Bachelor’s programme. In the first year you can select either Dutch-language or English-language tuition, while from the second year onwards all teaching takes place in English. This is another indication of how internationally oriented this degree programme is.

    The following admission requirements apply to the bachelors programme in Aerospace Engineering:

    Numerus Clausus and Decentralised Selection

    A numerus clausus combined with decentralised selection applies to the bachelors programme in Aerospace Engineering. The numerus clausus means that a maximum of 440 new students will be admitted to the Bachelors degree programme in Aerospace Engineering for academic year 2013-2014. The number of available places is divided using a weighted lottery procedure.
